The
mission of the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault
is to promote the compassionate and just treatment of survivors,
their loved ones and significant others, foster collaborative
relationships between community systems, and affect attitudinal
and behavioral changes in society as we work toward the elimination
of sexual violence against all people.
NJCASA
board members and other volunteers have been successfully helping
survivors of sexual assault since 1981. Since September 1999,
thanks to generous grants made through the State Office of Victim
Witness Advocacy and the State's Division on Women in the Department
of Community Affairs, NJCASA has a fully-staffed Trenton office.
NJCASA is the collective voice for Sexual Violence Programs
in all 21 counties throughout the state of NJ, each of which
operates as an individual unit. With the opening of the Trenton
office, NJCASA has increased its advocacy on behalf of sexual
violence survivors on a statewide level.
- NJCASA
launched a statewide public education campaign in 2000.
- NJCASA
works to encourage legislation for the compassionate and just
treatment of survivors of sexual violence.
- Having
a more powerful voice not only provides new opportunities
to raise awareness but it reinforces the efforts already being
made through the local Sexual Violence Programs.
-
NJCASA
begins by believing. The first real step toward healing is
to know that there are people who will believe.
-
NJCASA
member program volunteers will accompany survivors to the
hospital and to the police station at the survivors' request.
They will also accompany survivors to court if they decide
to prosecute.
-
The
advocates of the local programs are there for the survivor,
to help them to regain some measure of control in their lives.
-
NJCASA
member programs offer counseling on an ongoing basis to survivors
as well as their loved ones and significant others.
-
NJCASA
member programs offer counseling and other types of referrals
for those who want them.
-
Free,
confidential statewide and county hotline numbers are open
24 hours a day, seven days a week.
-
NJCASA's
member program services are open to anyone; it does not have
to be what is called a recent rape. People are invited to
call regarding something that happened in the past; and counseling
for past incidents is available as well.
There
are Sexual Violence Programs in each
of the state's 21 counties.
