False Allegations: Moving Beyond the Issue to Successfully Investigate and Prosecute Non-Stranger Sexual Assault

Sgt. Archambault’s presentation will look at why false reporting is a less frequent occurrence than is often depicted in the media and crime reports. She will explain what actually constitutes a false report and the difficulties in distinguishing between genuine false reports and baseless or unfounded reports. In addition, Sgt. Archambault will examine some of the factors that underlie the impression of a high prevalence of false reporting as well as the problems associated with this popular misconception. The first open session will focus on the complexities of false reporting as seen in media headlines and within the overall dynamics of sexual assault. The second session, for law enforcement, prosecutorial and probation officials only, will concentrate on the differences between false reports versus unfounded and baseless reports, “red flags” that trigger suspicions of a false report, and the subsequent complexities of investigating and prosecuting cases of sexual assault.
