How You Can Help: Become a Member

Begin by Believing… that all of us have a role in working toward the elimination of sexual violence in our communities.

By becoming a Member of NJCASA, you will be taking a step towards fulfilling that role, and demonstrating that you care about NJCASA's mission to end sexual violence against all people.

The statistics for sexual assault may seem daunting:

  • Over 200,000 women and men, age 13 and over, are raped or sexually assaulted each year in this country. (National Crime Victimization Survey, 2002)
  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by age 18 (Finkelhor, et al., 1990).
  • 67% of all sexual assault victims, who reported to law enforcement agencies, were under 18 years of age (Snyder, 2000).
  • 7 in 10 rape and sexual assault victims know their attacker prior to the assault (Rennison, 2000).
  • 61% of rapes and sexual assaults are not reported to the police. In the 39% reported to police, there is only a 16.3% chance that the rapist will end up in prison. Combined, these statistics mean that only about 6% of rapists (1 in 16) will ever spend a day in jail. (National Crime Victimization Survey, 1999)

But with your help, NJCASA can continue its efforts to change these statistics in New Jersey.

In 2004, NJCASA member Rape Care Centers:
  • Answered 10,801 calls from victims and 13,366 calls from victims' family, loved ones and other victim-related calls.
  • Accompanied over 2,000 victims during medical/forensic exams, to the police station, or to court proceedings.
  • Provided counseling for 4,712 victims and significant others during a total of 15,462 sessions.
  • Provided 1,620 prevention education programs to a total of 49,014 college and school students. They also provided 940 professional trainings and community presentations to 19,426 individuals in New Jersey communities. (2004 Performance Report Totals)
