How You Can Help: Become a Member
Begin
by Believing
that all of us have a role in working
toward the elimination of sexual violence in our communities.
By
becoming a Member of NJCASA, you will be taking a step
towards fulfilling that role, and demonstrating that
you care about NJCASA's mission to end sexual violence
against all people.
The
statistics for sexual assault may seem daunting:
-
Over
200,000 women and men, age 13 and over, are raped
or sexually assaulted each year in this country. (National
Crime Victimization Survey, 2002)
-
1
in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted
by age 18 (Finkelhor, et al., 1990).
-
67%
of all sexual assault victims, who reported to law
enforcement agencies, were under 18 years of age (Snyder,
2000).
-
7
in 10 rape and sexual assault victims know their attacker
prior to the assault (Rennison, 2000).
-
61%
of rapes and sexual assaults are not reported to the
police. In the 39% reported to police, there is only
a 16.3% chance that the rapist will end up in prison.
Combined, these statistics mean that only about 6%
of rapists (1 in 16) will ever spend a day in jail.
(National Crime Victimization Survey, 1999)
But
with your help, NJCASA can continue its efforts to change
these statistics in New Jersey.
